Mayr-Melnhof Holz Leoben
The headquarters of the Mayr-Melnhof Holz Group founded in 1850 and the registered office of the holding is in Leoben. Most of the 1.3 m. solid cubic metres of softwood required for production come from the densely wooded surrounding regions. In the large scale state-of-the-art sawmill, 97% of the standardised sawn timber is produced from spruce and 3% from larch. A part of the production is processed into glulam and plywood in the wood processing companies in the close-by Gaishorn and Kalwand. The other part is exported throughout the world by Mayr-Melnhof Timber Trading and via other sales channels.
The local Mayr-Melnhof Rundholzhandel GmbH is responsible for the acquisition of logs. A yearly purchasing volume of 1.6 m. solid cubic metres is required for the supply of the sawmill Leoben as well as the sawmill Schaffer in Eppenstein.
100% added value at the location Leoben
The by-product bark from the sawmill is used in a CHP plant next to the factory premises to supply the location with energy. Operators are the Steirische Gas und Wärme GmbH (95%) in cooperation with Mayr-Melnhof Holz Leoben (5%).
The generated thermal energy is used both to heat the dry kilns of the sawmill and to dry the shavings from the sawmill for the pellets plant of the local Holzindustrie Leitinger. The surplus sawmill waste is used to produce chipboards in the neighbouring Novopan works. Wood chips are processed in the close-by carton, pulp and paper mills.
