Hungary’s First Concrete-Free School

Hungary’s first concrete-free elementary school is a modern solid-wood structure built mainly with natural materials.
Wood, as a building material, shapes both the construction and the appearance of the building.

The production facilities at Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Gaishorn and Leoben supplied cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements for the project, enabling rapid and efficient construction.

The aim was to create an honest and welcoming building in Nagymaros, with a thoughtful choice of materials and wood at its heart. The wood remains largely visible both inside and out and shapes the character of the building.
At the heart of the elementary school is the central circulation axis—the so-called “Schulstraße”—along which flexibly usable classrooms and common areas are arranged. In addition to the classrooms, the new building offers space for art and gym rooms as well as areas for the teaching staff.

Generous glass facades and direct access to the outdoor areas create a wide range of possible uses. Thanks to its modular floor plan, the building can be expanded and flexibly adapted as needed.

Mayr-Melnhof Holz Leoben and Gaishorn supplied approximately 390 m³ of PEFC-certified cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements—pre-assembled and ready for installation—for the ceilings and walls of this forward-looking school project. Thanks to prefabrication, the entire timber structure was assembled in just under three weeks.

The design concept views the school not only as a place for learning, but also as a space for socializing and spending time. With its innovative timber construction and flexible use concept, the school reflects a commitment to innovative building practices.
