Natural materials for a living history
The VONK Museum Park in Eindhoven (NL) is a unique venue that brings 10,000 years of history to life in an innovative way. By combining the ‘PreHistoric Village’ with the Eindhoven Museum, the existing open-air museum merges with the modern exhibition building to create a holistic visitor experience.
Mayr-Melnhof Holz Reuthe supplied a total of 315 m³ of MM masterline glued laminated timber for the timber structure of the new museum building.

The new museum building expands the existing museum park to include an interactive exhibition on the history of the region, featuring selected items from the collection. Great emphasis is placed on active participation: visitors are invited to experiment, create and discover for themselves. Historical workshops and authentic recreations of everyday life are complemented by multimedia elements and hands-on activities.
Architecturally, the building blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. A planted roof garden, supported by a striking timber structure comprising wooden posts and glulam beams, as well as cross-laminated timber roof panels, defines the building’s distinctive form. The façade elements consist of prefabricated lime-hemp panels with pigmented lime render. Their varied layered structure echoes the local soil profile. Together with the green roof, this creates the impression of a building that has grown directly out of the landscape. The interlocking trusses give the roof its sculptural curvature and create varying ceiling heights inside.
For this extraordinary project, Mayr-Melnhof Holz Reuthe was responsible for the construction of the entire timber structure, including the glued and block-glued components, the joinery and the timber finish.
The result in Eindhoven is a building that impressively highlights the innovative and forward-looking character of the Netherlands’ first bio-based museum.
