Tradition meets modernity
At the Oldenburg Horse Centre in Vechta (Germany), an important chapter in horse breeding has been rewritten on a sustainable foundation. The traditional auction hall has been extensively renovated and expanded using timber construction methods – a milestone for events, breeders and international guests.
In line with the motto ‘Everything from a single source’, Mayr-Melnhof Holz supplied the MM masterline glued laminated timber as well as all steel parts and fasteners free to the construction site, ready for assembly – the 36-metre-long gable roof trusses are particularly striking – and was commissioned with the complete structural analysis and work planning.

Auctions have always been an integral part of the Oldenburg horse breeding tradition in Vechta, Lower Saxony. Six times a year, the Oldenburg Horse Centre in Vechta hosts high-quality auctions where outstanding young horses take their first big steps towards top-level sport. Each presentation is a special event, characterised by elegance, excitement and the unmistakable atmosphere of these internationally renowned events.
In order to meet the steadily growing public interest and increased demands, the existing infrastructure of the auction hall was no longer sufficient. With around 25 major events per year and over 90,000 visitors annually – including around 30,000 international guests – the centre regularly reached its capacity limits. The renovation and expansion of the hall was therefore a necessary step towards the future.
Mayr-Melnhof Holz Olsberg supplied 250 m³ of PEFC-certified MM masterline glued laminated timber for the renovation and expansion, including glulam trusses, purlins, gable frames and roof trusses. A special feature here are the twelve gable roof trusses with an impressive span of around 36 metres.
Following the renovation, the auction hall in Vechta now presents itself as a place that combines tradition, functionality and modern architecture – offering Oldenburg's horse stars a stylish and future-proof home for their grand entrance.
